Fit for the Race.

Tuesday the 7th of Movember and in Australia the ‘Race that stops a nation’ was set to take flight. Melbourne Cup Day and the annual ANZA get-together was in full swing. It’s no wonder the Cup has it’s nickname as hordes of well-dressed colonial hooligans gave up their duties for the day in exchange for large hats and free-flowing champaigne – Tough Day!?

Starting off their three week period with no game it was no surprise that the Slingers were on standby to lend a hand. But before they could enjoy the festivities the Slingers were back at their home track at BAS sweating it out.

The Team was put through their second lot of physical testing for the season. From agility test to endurance the boys were worked out thoroughly shedding that extra weight before the main event. Giving an excellent indication of how far they have come from the start of the season the second lot of test showed where the main points for perfection were needed.

Coach Mcleod expressed positive remarks as he was please with his boys performance.

“I will be happy to see the results as our whole squad performed very well today”

Having a small break in between games now will give the Slingers a chance to ‘tighten the screws’ now as they go into a three game away stretch that will prove to be a challenge. Learning to travel is a task for any new team in the League as the long hauls to different cities proves to be a key factor in a teams success. No team in the NBL’s history has every had such a demanding away schedule. With opposing teams making the seven and a half hour trip a twice in the regular season the Slingers eclipse all teams with more than ten trips overseas. In the next three games we play three of the top playoff contenders in the League and there is no reason why we can not rise to the challenge. Eleven games in and twenty-two to go till the playoffs, the boys are a third of the way there with plenty left in them. It looks like an interesting season as the Slingers look to grind this one out.

On a lighter note, Head Coach Gordie Mcleod celebrated his birthday yesterday, from player to coach Gordie has played with and developed some of the best players in the Leagues history. Happy Birthday mate and i’m sure everyone will agree that we look forward to seeing you make more history here in Singapore.

What is this term Blog!?

Through utter frustration and many attempts of publishing a blog i think this one might finally work.  I guess this is supposed to be another perspective from people who have made and are still making the Slingers happen. Hopefully this will provide an insight and help to educate some in this new venture called the Singapore Slingers.

All but six months ago the City of Singapore held the opening night of what would turn out to be the first venture for a professional sports team in the Island Nation. Since the first game on the 20th of September the Slingers have estblished themselves as a new force in Singaporean Basketball.

Only seven games into their inaugural season, the pre-maturely dubbed “Pride of the Lion City” is cementing themselves within the community and becoming a new face for basketball.  Seeing the team built from the ground up can’t help but inspire excitement as the more and more people find out and follow this new phenomenon. From the initial idea, to seeing the first game played, the Slingers have produced criticism and doubt from many within the Lion City. With all change comes doubt….  Doubt fuels challenge and challenge drives success.

Playing seven games at the largest Stadium in the (Aust.) NBL the Slingers are emerging as one of the City’s premiere sporting teams. With eight more home games remaining in the regular season the Slingers will be making a push for the play-offs as they grind out the rest of their inaugural season.

Living up to their nickname the Singapore Slingers are helping to boost an already vibrant basketball scene. With their focus to be firmly entrenched at the grass-roots level the sport can only be elevated as the schoolyard baller to the avid fan can now enjoy the sport live at what ever level they choose.

Tonight the Slinger take on the Cairns Taipans in the first of four away games. Cairns is running fifth in the Philips Championship and narrowly beat the Slingers in their last meeting at the Indoor Stadium. Picked to represent in the “World All-Stars” hopefully Mike Helms can display some of his 2-time All-Star talent and come away from Cairns with the ‘W’. The game can be followed on the Official Philips Chamionship site and start’s at 5:40pm local Singaporean time.

More and more people are catching onto the vibe and it is evident to see that Singapore realise that this is not just a passing road show.

The Slingers next home game at the Indoor Stadium is on the 13th of December against the New Zealand Breakers, look out for our boys throughout the month of November.
